Meet the MD

I’m Dr. Christine, the founder and physician at Food First MD.

My mission is to empower patients with the knowledge of how-to tailor their food choices and lifestyle habits to influence the intricate biochemistry within their bodies. This transformational journey enables them to emerge as different people potentially avoiding years of frustration, ineffective treatments, and debilitating ailments. I was drawn to the metabolic approach after struggling to optimize my own health following conventional advice.

“Food First is the foundation of my medical practice. When nourished properly, the human body can heal with time and age with strength.“

—Christine Najjar, MD, MS, MHP, ABOM

My Journey

My journey starts in grade school. I am among the first generation of my Lebanese family to be born in the USA. I spent the school year stateside and I spent summers on the Mediterranean in Lebanon. And the most curious thing would happen. Every summer when I went to Lebanon my waistline shrunk. And every year when I came back to New York my waistline expanded. Slowly over the years there was more expanding than there was shrinking. I soon began feeling self-conscious. By the time I reached middle school, I hated my body fat.

I started doing what everyone said I should do, “eat less, and exercise more”. I learned all about calories and how to count points. I played sports every day after school. I was a three-sport athlete: volleyball in the fall, basketball in the winter, and soccer in the spring. If I didn’t have practice I would be at the gym on the treadmill, lifting weights, or taking a fitness class.

I had lost 5 pounds in the months before a doctor’s appointment. The physician carried out his physical exam without saying much and on the way out the door turned around to tell me that my BMI was in the overweight category and that I should eat less and exercise more. He didn’t ask if I was concerned about my weight, he didn’t ask if my weight adversely affected my quality of life or caused any emotional instability. And he didn’t ask what I was eating. He told me to do what I was already doing. That’s when I realized he couldn’t help me.

What followed was a decade of yo-yo dieting and a relentless hunt to figure out how body fat worked. I started with a bachelors in biochemistry which gave me a strong fundamental understanding of metabolism. I went to medical school and learned everything about anatomy, physiology, pathology, and pharmacology but the two-week nutrition course was… lacking. Determined to be a different type of doctor, I dedicated weekends during the last two years of medical school to getting a master’s in nutrition.

In 2016 I finished both my medical degree and my nutrition degree. I worked closely with obesity medicine specialists and bariatric surgeons. I worked one on one counseling patients on weight loss using the most up-to-date strategies, and yet my waistline continued to expand.

By the start of residency, I was experiencing a new symptom, HANGRY. If I was late for lunch, I would get brain fog and could not focus. I became irritable and anxious without food. I was constantly cold and always hungry. I developed eczema. I was sicker and heavier than ever before in my life, despite mindful eating, despite hours of meal prep, and despite diligently counting calories.

I felt broken. If I couldn’t help myself, how was I going to help anyone else? I started reading books. I kept learning, and finally, something clicked. I realized it’s not about physics and energy balance. It’s about biochemistry and metabolism. Food triggers hormones and hormones control how the body functions.

Within months of this epiphany, I went from a size 16 to a size 8. I was no longer hungry or cold, but satisfied and comfortable. I could effortlessly remember things and my focus sharpened. I felt like I could control my anxiety and impulsive sensations. Best of all, I rediscovered self-confidence across all facets of life.

Following residency, I began implementing the metabolic approach in clinical practice as a primary care physician. The outcomes were nothing short of remarkable. Patients not only achieved significant weight loss, but also found relief from a myriad of symptoms. This often resulted in the avoidance, reduction or even elimination of prescription medications and marked enhancements in their overall quality of life.

What I witnessed with this metabolic approach was unlike anything I had encountered during traditional training or modern-day health systems. Determined to bring this care to a broader audience, in 2021 I established Food First MD, a grassroots metabolic medicine practice dedicated to providing this delicious and transformative solution.
